Description
Many people go to Franz Josef on the South Island of New Zealand solely for the glacier hikes, spending a day or two there and then moving to the next destination. Many of the other hiking tracks are peaceful and uncrowded. This was true for our late spring walk to Callery Gorge. The track starts on a wide road but then narrows through the rainforest and then follows alongside an old gold mining water race, reminders of the gold mining era. The track then descends to the historic Callery Gorge swing bridge from which this photo is taken. The gorge has changed dramatically over the years due to gravel deposits filling in the gorge and raising the level of the riverbed. Franz Josef is within the Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.
