Description
Ocean waves surge into the midst of the Surge Pool at "Pancake Rocks," heavily eroded limestone outcroppings near Punakaiki on the South Island of New Zealand. Pancake Rocks are immense stacks of limestone, interspersed with ‘blowholes’ where the waves burst through at high tide. In rough weather, the surge and spray are reportedly quite impressive. But as luck would have it, we encountered lovely calm and sunny weather. Still the surge in the Surge Pool is mesmerizing as you watch the bull kelp that is attached to the rocks repeatedly billow back and forth. And you wait in vain for ‘the big one’, a rogue wave that will send the spray to the top of the rocks. Punakaiki Pancake Rocks are located in Paparoa National Park and draw thousands of visitors every year.
