Description
As I painted these clouds I recalled an occasion while in Training Branch for Environment Canada. Another instructor used the phrase "garbage cloud" to describe stratocumulus. How wrong and uniformed he was. I hesitate to use the word "garbage" cloud in the title so I used the friendlier and green term of "recycled".
Stratocumulus cloud are shaped in the boundary layer of the atmosphere and are in continual contact with the ground exchanging heat and moisture as well as wind energy. The result of these exchanges is the cloud itself. One can learn a lot about nature by observing the changes in the shape and structure of stratocumulus. They are in fact an integration over time and space of their interaction with the earth.
These particular spring time stratocumulus were strongly backlit by the sun sinking into the western horizon. I particularly enjoy the shade of blue of that spring sunset sky. Turbulence and moderate northwesterly winds were responsible for shaping these clouds and the moisture was recycled from the rain that preceded the cold front. These clouds had an interesting story to tell. It is only through a lack of knowledge that we ignore the beauty and intricacy of the world around us.
