Description
An Inwood youth struts past a barbershop on Sherman Avenue near Academy Street in this 1918 photograph. Despite rapid development in the early 1900s, parents complained that kids had little to do. Children, lacking playgrounds or public facilities, sometimes scavenged upturned cemeteries out of sheer boredom. “The police pay no attention if they don’t catch the children parading with skulls on sticks,” one mother griped. (Quote from New York Evening Post, June 21, 1924.)
