Graphotype was made in Euclid, Ohio by the Addressograph-Multigraph Company in the late 1930s. A graphotype machine was used like a typewriter, but it had enough power to punch letters into metal. When World War II began, graphotype machines were used to stamp nearly 19 million dog tags for the United States Military. Addressograph-Multigraph was formed by the merger of the American Multigraph Company and the Addressograph Company. Seeking a large site to build their new factory, the company relocated to Euclid, Ohio, due to its inexpensive land and clay sub-soil for a sturdy building foundation. The land was adjacent to the New York Central Railroad and with the promise for new utilities, they built one of the largest factories in the United States in 1932.
