Description
Landscape Arch in Arches National Park Moab Utah (USA) is an example of the changing nature of seemingly solid and permanent rock formations. In 1991, a 73-foot slab of rock fell from underneath the thinnest section of Landscape Arch. Then, in June 1995, two more rocks fell from the arch, one measuring 47 feet and the second 30 feet. The thin section of the arch is now five feet narrower than it used to be and looking quite fragile. So the Park Service has been forced to close the trail that runs beneath the arch. For now the arch is still standing and is ranked by the Natural Arch and Bridge Society as the fifth longest arch in the world (the other four are in China) and the longest in the US. In 2004, a team used laser technology to measure Landscape Arch. They found that it had a span of 290.1 feet (plus or minus 0.8 feet), a height of 77.5 feet, a width of 18 feet, a thickness of 6 feet, and an opening breadth of 295 feet. The rockfalls in recent decades have led to one of two beliefs: either Landscape Arch is at the end of its life cycle and will soon be a pile of rubble, or that the rockfalls have created a new, balanced arch that may yet be around for a few hundred more years.

Nice integration of the delicacy of the arched rock bridge with the monolithic shapes of the stones in the foreground. l/f/tweet
